On Monday night, 6 August 2018, Taskforce Nemesis members assisted by the Specialist Response Group conducted a targeted operation in Calwell.

The operation included a targeted vehicle stop and the execution of a search warrant at a residence.

A 36-year-old Calwell man and a 21-year-old Crace man were located in the vehicle. A search of the vehicle resulted in ACT Policing members seizing a loaded .357 calibre Ruger revolver.

A short time later, a search of the Calwell residence resulted in the seizure of a loaded 22/250 Ruger bolt action rifle, a shortened Marlin 9mm semi-automatic rifle and a magazine containing .45 calibre pistol rounds.

Police also seized a quantity of methamphetamine and a substance suspected to be MDMA.

Both men were arrested and in total 10 charges were laid as a result of yesterday’s Police action, and also stemming from a shooting incident on 28 June 2018 involving criminal gang members.

Charges include Unlawful possession of prohibited firearms (two counts), Unauthorised possession of firearm (two counts), Fail to correctly store firearm (three counts), Possess ammunition (two counts) and Possess prohibited weapon (one count).

The men will appear in the ACT Magistrates Court today where police will oppose bail.

“The weapons seized by police today are three fewer weapons that can be used to commit violent offences,” Detective Station Sergeant Harry Hains said.

“This operation is the latest in a series conducted by Taskforce Nemesis with the aim of disrupting criminal gang activity.

“If you have any information regarding illegal firearms, Police want to hear from you.”

Police are urging anyone who may have any information regarding illegal firearms or drugs to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or via the Crime Stoppers ACT website. Information can be provided anonymously.
