School zones back in action today

Traffic car

ACT Policing is reminding motorists that the 2020 school year begins today (February 3) and 40km/h speed limits are now in place in school zones.

These speed restrictions are in force between 8am and 4pm across the ACT.

Officer in charge Traffic Operations Detective Station Sergeant Marcus Boorman reinforced that these restrictions are there to protect our most vulnerable road users, and we all have a role to play in keeping our children safe.

“Road safety is everyone’s responsibility and it is important motorists slow down and pay special attention when travelling near schools,” Detective Station Sergeant Boorman said.

“Children’s behaviour around traffic can often be unpredictable. The lower speed limit around our school zones reduces the risk and potential severity of a crash.”

ACT Policing will be actively enforcing these limits across Canberra and the drivers are reminded tough penalties apply for those who ignore speed zone restrictions.
