Probationary driver caught high range drink driving

Drink Driving

A 53-year-old Melba man with a probationary licence will face court for drink driving after he was apprehended over the weekend (Saturday, 15 July).

About 6.00pm, police received multiple calls in relation to a vehicle swerving into oncoming traffic on Kuringa Drive, Spence. The vehicle has collided with an oncoming vehicle resulting in minor damage, and fled the scene.

Traffic Operations members located the vehicle at an address in Melba, where the male driver failed to provide a roadside breath screen. The man was transported to City Police Station and underwent breath analysis, returning a result of 0.269. The legal limit for a probationary driver is 0.00.

Police issued the driver with an Immediate Suspension Notice suspending his driver licence on the spot. The man will face court next month charged with high range drink driving, and using an unregistered and uninsured vehicle.

Acting Station Sergeant Paul Hutcheson of Traffic Operations said that police were amazed and thankful that this incident did not result in serious injuries or worse to other road users.

“Thank you to those members of the public who called police, this vital information assisted police in removing this reckless driver from our roads,” said Acting Station Sergeant Hutcheson.
