ACT Policing continues to target drivers who disregard the well-known drink-driving and drug-driving laws on Canberra’s roads this Easter.

Among the drivers caught under the influence of alcohol were four with blood alcohol levels more than twice the 0.05 legal limit. Those drivers, who will face court via summons, were:

  • A 45-year-old Evatt man who recorded 0.130
  • A 32-year-old Thai national who recorded 0.136
  • A 37-year-old Banks man who recorded 0.134, and
  • A 32-year-old Banks woman who recorded 0.113.

Additionally, during speed enforcement operations on the Kings Highway on Friday night (19 April 2019) a 31-year-old woman from NSW driving on a Provisional Licence was detected at 96km/h in an 80km/h zone.

She was subjected to roadside alcohol and drug tests and returned a positive result for methamphetamine, arrested, and bailed to appear in the ACT Magistrates Court for speeding and drug driving at a later date.

ACT Policing Officer in Charge, Traffic Operations Acting Station Sergeant David Wills said such behaviour is deeply concerning.

“Driving intoxicated by drugs or alcohol is illegal and highly dangerous,” Acting Station Sergeant Wills said.

“It’s disappointing that these drivers have put their lives, and the lives of other road users, in danger by acting irresponsibly.

“The message is simple, and it isn’t new. Don’t drive while under the influence or alcohol or drugs. Don’t speed. Police are targeting dangerous behaviour this Easter and if you do the wrong thing you will get caught.”

ACT Policing would like to remind all road users that double demerit points apply to all speed-related offences until midnight Monday night.
