Police target speeding motorists in February

ACT Policing will target speeding motorists on Canberra’s roads this month.

An average of 358 Traffic Infringement Notices (TIN) were issued per month in 2018, or just under 12 a day.

During the Christmas and New Year double demerit period, 159 TINs were issued.  

Officer in Charge of Traffic Operations, Acting Station Sergeant David Wills warned motorists if they exceed the speed limits they can be issued infringements that incur substantial financial penalties and demerit points.

“Police are on Canberra’s roads targeting speeding motorists,” Acting Station Sergeant Wills said.

“When you speed, you have less time to slow down and the harder you hit.”

With students returning to school next week drivers are reminded that 40km/h speed limits are once again in effect in school zones between 8am and 4pm.

“We are going into another school year so I want to stress when driving in or near a school zone, drivers stick to sign-posted speed limit and stay alert,” he said.

In 2018, ACT Policing issued 586 TINs in school zones.

“Children are some of our most vulnerable road users and we want to ensure their safety travelling to and from school,” Acting Station Sergeant Wills said.

“Speeding is a choice. You might think it’s only a little bit over but it could change your life forever.”

Speeding motorists will be targeted this month as part of the joint road safety campaign between ACT Policing and the Justice and Community Safety Directorate.

This campaign forms part of the ACT Road Safety Strategy 2011-2020 which prioritise a Vision Zero approach to road safety.
