Police conduct highway targeting activity

ACT Road Policing conducted concentrated enforcement activities on two of the major highways in and out of the ACT yesterday (Saturday, 29 July 2023).    

Between 9.30am and 11.30am, police conducted traffic targeting on the Monaro Highway at Royalla and Williamsdale, with subsequent targeting activity between 1.00pm and 3.30pm on the Kings Highway at Kowen.   

A total of 26 alcohol and 10 drug screening tests were conducted during these operations, with traffic stops resulting in 23 infringement notices and cautions being issued for varying offences.   

The Monaro Highway activity identified a 32-year-old Griffith woman who was found to be driving an unregistered, uninsured vehicle as an unaccompanied learner with two small children in the car.    

Police were disappointed by the number of drivers who were either unaware of or ignored the 40km/h speed limit past emergency service vehicles displaying blue and red flashing lights. Four drivers were issued infringement notices for this offence across the day.    

This enforcement activity is a timely reminder that police can be anywhere, anytime. Police will continue to target driver behaviour on all ACT roads, be it suburban streets, major thoroughfares, or highways in and out of the Territory.     

Drivers are also reminded that a 40km/h speed limit applies when passing a stationary emergency services vehicle that is displaying blue or red flashing lights, regardless of the sign posted speed limit.
