A 61-year-old Chifley man will face the ACT Magistrates Court this morning after making repeated phone calls to Triple Zero overnight (Tuesday, 8 August).

Between 10:00pm and 1:00am, the man made eight calls to Triple Zero, and was unable to explain why an emergency existed. About 11:50pm, police attended his residence in Chifley, providing a warning that if the calls continued he would be placed under arrest. Shortly after police departed the residence, the man continued to call Triple Zero.

About 1:05am, police re-attended the residence, arresting the man and transporting him to the ACT Watch House. The man will face the ACT Magistrates Court this morning charged with improper use of an emergency call service.

Detective Superintendent Francis Jamieson of ACT Policing Operations Centre said that nuisance calls reduce ACT Policing’s capacity to respond to genuine emergency incidents in a timely manner.

“These calls occupy emergency service lines unnecessarily and delay response to genuine calls, putting the safety of other people at risk,” said Detective Superintendent Jamieson.
