Make sure your home is secure this Easter long weekend

ACT Policing is reminding the community to secure their homes this Easter long weekend.

Acting Superintendent Community Safety, Matt Craft said a number of simple home safety measures can deter would be criminals.

“Burglaries are often opportunistic crimes, with most intruders looking for, and often finding houses, sheds, garages and vehicles left open or unlocked. This allows them to get what they can and make a quick getaway,” said Acting Superintendent Craft.

“Before you leave, ensure all doors and windows are securely locked and your curtains and blinds are closed. If you have sensor lights ensure they are left on. If you have visible security systems for external doors and windows they can also be an effective deterrent.”

“Keep any spare keys are out of sight and ensure your letter box and back gate are padlocked. Ensure you keep your valuables safe and out of sight.”

“If you are going to be away for more than a few days arrange for a neighbour, friend or family member to collect your mail and look after your bins.”

“It’s also important to know what to do if you arrive home and you believe someone is inside. Don’t go into your home, go somewhere safe and call police. Make sure you are out of sight and a safe distance away.”

“If you are at home this long weekend, it’s also important to consider home security. Keep your front door and vehicle locked and ensure your back gate is secure.”

Police urge anyone who sees any suspicious or unusual activity across the long weekend to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or via the Crime Stoppers ACT website. Information can be provided anonymously.
