Journalist Advisory: Tree planting marks centenary of Commonwealth policing
Australian Federal Police Commissioner Andrew Colvin will be joined by ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr for a special tree planting today (Monday 11 December) to mark 100 years to the day since the formation of the first Commonwealth Police Force.
On 11 December 1917, then-Prime Minister Billy Hughes created the first national police force after being targeted in an egg-throwing incident while visiting the Queensland community of Warwick.
This morning, the AFP Commissioner and Chief Minister will together plant a cork oak in the National Arboretum’s historic cork oak plantation, which was planted 100 years ago and is also marking its centenary in 2017.
