Hughes man charged with possession of child abuse material

ARRESTED Child exploitation offences

ACT Policing has charged a 59-year-old Hughes man with possession of child abuse material.

Yesterday (Wednesday 20 May 2020) officers attached to the ACT Joint Anti Child Exploitation Team (ACT-JACET) executed a search warrant at a home in Hughes.

The 59-year-old man was subsequently arrested at the home and later charged with one count of possession of child abuse material.

Electronic devices were seized during the search warrant and will be subject to further forensic examination.

The man is scheduled to appear in the ACT Magistrates court today (Thursday, 21 May 2020).

Note to media:

USE OF TERM 'CHILD ABUSE’ OR ‘CHILD EXPLOITATION', NOT 'CHILD PORNOGRAPHY'

Use of the phrase "child pornography" benefits child sex abusers because it:

  • indicates legitimacy and compliance on the part of the victim and therefore legality on the part of the abuser; and
  • conjures images of children posing in 'provocative' positions, rather than suffering horrific abuse.
