ACT Policing is reminding motorists to drive safely this Labour Day long weekend and warns that double demerit points will be in place.

Double demerit points are effective from the first instance on Friday 29 September 2017 until midnight Monday 2 October 2017. They will apply on all speed and seatbelt offences, use of a mobile phone while driving and a number of other traffic offences.

Other traffic offences listed in Schedule 1 of the Australian Road Rules which hold demerit points will incur one extra demerit point.

Officer in Charge Traffic Operations, Acting Station Sergeant Marcus Boorman said road safety is everyone’s responsibility, particularly during busy holiday periods.

“This weekend, the safety of all road users is a priority for ACT Policing. We will be targeting those who do the wrong thing.”

“We remind road users to take regular breaks, particularly if you are travelling long distances, to ensure you and your passengers arrive safely at your destination,” said Station Sergeant Boorman.

“Make sure you obey the road rules, slow down and show respect and courtesy to everyone else on the road.”
