Wanniassa man arrested over child exploitation offences

Facing court

A 44-year-old Wanniassa man will face court this morning (Thursday, 17 October 2019) charged with child exploitation offences.

Following a lengthy investigation, members of ACT Policing’s Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Team executed a search warrant at a residence in Wanniassa yesterday (16 October, 2019).

During the search, police seized a laptop and a number of mobile phones.

The man was arrested at the scene, and charged with use carriage service to transmit indecent communication to person under 16, attempt to groom young person, and three counts of possess child exploitation material.

Anyone who has any information about people involved in child exploitation is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or online at http://crimestoppers.com.au. Information can be provided anonymously.

Note to media:  THIS IS CHILD EXPLOITATION, NOT ‘CHILD PORNOGRAPHY’

Use of the phrase ‘child pornography’ actually benefits child sex abusers because:

• it indicates legitimacy and compliance on the part of the victim and therefore legality on the part of the abuser; and

• it conjures up images of children posing in ‘provocative’ positions, rather than suffering horrific abuse.

Every photograph captures an actual situation where a child has been abused. This is not pornography.
