Police urge public to be aware of elder abuse

ACT Policing is urging the community to be aware of the signs and indicators of elder abuse, this Elder Abuse Awareness Day (Friday, 15 June 2018).

Elder abuse is any behaviour or act that harms an older person by someone they have a trusting relationship with. There are six types of elder abuse: financial, psychological, sexual, neglect, physical and social isolation.

Increasing in prevalence, only 1 in 5 cases of elder abuse are reported in Australia.

Officer in Charge Community Safety, Station Sergeant Jeff Knight said everyone has a responsibility to treat members of our community with respect, particularly the elderly.

“This underreported crime has detrimental impacts for some of the most vulnerable people in our community. We all have a responsibility to look after one another, and ensure everyone is treated with respect,” said Station Sergeant Knight.

“Some indications that elder abuse may be occurring include isolation from friends and visitors, excessive or increasing control, abusing power of attorney, abandonment and intimating and bullying behaviours.

“Signs someone may be the victim of elder abuse include unpaid bills, injuries, inconsistent behaviours, a decrease in their living conditions and appearance, little or no decision making, withdrawn and fearful appearance, and stress when certain people are around.”

“If you see any behaviours that indicate elder abuse call Police for advice on 131 444.”
