Police seek car thief stymied by handbrake

Witnesses sought

ACT Policing is seeking the public’s assistance to identify a man who stole a black-coloured Mazda 3 on Saturday, 28 March 2020.

About 8.30am, the man stole the vehicle from a business car park on Barrier Street, Fyshwick, after the owner had exited the car, but left the engine running.

The owner confronted the man before he drove the vehicle away; however, the man drove away into Newcastle Street with the vehicle’s handbrake still on.

The vehicle’s rear tyres both blew out in Ipswich Street, and the man abandoned the vehicle there, leaving the scene in a silver-coloured Hyundai iLoad van.

Police are urging anyone who can identify the man or may have any information, CCTV or dash-cam footage that could assist police to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or via the Crime Stoppers ACT website.
