Police arrest wanted man following vehicle rollover

Witnesses sought

ACT Policing arrested a 28-year-old Monash man after he crashed his vehicle, flipping it onto its roof, at a Calwell roundabout on Saturday night (28 March 2020).

Police will allege that about 9.50pm a Toyota Starlet hatchback failed to stop when directed to do so in Calwell. Officers recognised the driver as a person with outstanding warrants.

The same vehicle again failed to stop at another location in Calwell a short time later.

For public safety, and in an attempt to stop the vehicle, police established a cordon in the area.

About 10pm the vehicle was driven onto the wrong side of the road towards police at the intersection of Ashley Drive and Johnson Drive in Calwell. It hit the gutter and flipped onto its roof.

The driver crawled out of the vehicle and attempted to flee on foot, but he was apprehended in a nearby backyard a short time later.

The man was taken to hospital to be treated for injuries received in the collision.

Police expect to lay multiple charges against the man including failing to stop, using an unregistered vehicle, common assault, trespass, and warrant offences.

Anyone who saw a Toyota Starlet with registration YEZ85U being driven erratically in Calwell, or who has CCTV or dash-cam footage of the vehicle is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or via the Crime Stoppers ACT website. Please quote reference 6514780.
