March road safety focus: vulnerable road users

This month, the joint road safety campaign between ACT Policing and the Justice and Community Safety Directorate will focus on awareness of vulnerable road users.

Vulnerable road users are children, pedestrians, motorcyclists and cyclists, as they do not have the same protection as a car during a collision, which makes them more vulnerable.

Officer in Charge Traffic Operations, Acting Superintendent Marcus Boorman said the road rules and regulations are in place to ensure the safety of all road users.

“Road safety is everyone’s responsibility - slow down, be alert of your surroundings and be vigilant and aware of vulnerable road users,” said Acting Superintendent Boorman.

“A minor accident between a car and vulnerable road users can have significant consequences of serious injury or even death.”

“I urge all drivers to keep an eye out for pedestrians, especially children, in shopping areas, many of which are shared zones.”

“I also urge cyclists, pedestrians and motorcyclists to ensure they obey the road rules and pay appropriate attention to nearby traffic.”

This campaign forms part of the ACT Road Safety Strategy 2011-2020 which prioritises a Vision Zero approach to road safety.
