Man to face court on serious driving and firearm charges

A 38-year-old man is expected to face the ACT Magistrates Court today (Tuesday 11 August 2020) on driving and firearm offences.

About 12.35am, police observed a silver Mitsubishi SUV at Oaks Estate road do a U-turn before accelerating at considerable speed towards Canberra Avenue, Beard.

Police activated emergency lights and sirens, and the man continued driving at speeds of up to 180km/h in an 80km/h sign posted area.

A short time later the vehicle drove over a roundabout at Isa Street, Fyshwick, separating both front tyres from the rims. The vehicle came to an abrupt stop and the driver fled on foot.

Police apprehended the man and ACT Ambulance Service Paramedics assessed him before taking him to hospital. He was later released to the ACT Watch House.

The 38-year-old will face charges of failing to stop for police, dangerous driving, unlicensed driver, possessing a drug of dependence, possess a prohibited firearm and possess ammunition.
