Man to face court over attempted aggravated robbery in Wanniassa

Facing Court

A 19-year-old Torrens man will face court today charged over an attempted aggravated robbery on Sunday, 21 June 2020.

About 8.55pm, the man and a co-offender allegedly approached a woman in the car park of the Erindale Shopping Centre, located on Comire Street, Wanniassa.

Police allege the man demanded the woman hand over money, while the co-offender is believed to have threatened the woman with a knife.

After a brief struggle, the man and the co-offender fled the scene empty-handed in a blue Suzuki Swift.

About 9.30pm that evening, police observed the Suzuki Swift travelling on London Circuit. Police conducted a traffic stop on this vehicle, and upon noticing that one of the occupants matched the description of the offender from the earlier attempted aggravated robbery, placed the man under arrest.

He is due to face the ACT Magistrates Court this morning charged with one count of attempted aggravated robbery (in company).

ACT Policing’s Detective Inspector Matt Reynolds said this arrest was another warning to criminal elements in the Canberra region.

“This is an excellent result for our officers, with the combined efforts of Criminal Investigations, General Duties, and Road Policing members securing the arrest of this offender only a short time after the alleged offence,” Detective Inspector Reynolds said.

“This is a timely reminder that if you commit crime in the ACT, expect to be caught, and expect to charged.”

Investigations into the identity of the co-offender are ongoing.
