Man to face court following fail to stop incident in Belconnen

Facing court

A 23-year-old Florey man will face the ACT Magistrates Court today following a fail to stop incident in Belconnen yesterday (Sunday, 16 June 2019).

About 10am, police were called to Parkwood Road in West Belconnen following reports of two vehicles doing burnouts and causing minor damage to another vehicle.

Police saw two vehicles, a blue Lexus IS200 and a blue Ford Falcon, which they allege were being driven erratically on Parkwood Road.

Police directed the vehicles to stop but it is alleged both drivers ignored the direction, accelerating towards Southern Cross Drive before continuing through Flynn, Spence and Florey.

During this time, police allege that both vehicles were driven directly at police in a menacing fashion, and that the Lexus was also driven on the wrong side of the road.

The driver of the Lexus was arrested a short time later following a collision with another vehicle at the corner of John Cleland Crescent and Tattersall Crescent, Florey. The driver of the other vehicle sustained minor injuries in the collision.

The man has been charged with a range of driving offences, including fail to stop for police, unlicensed driving, aggravated dangerous driving, and driving under the influence of drugs.

Officer in Charge of Gungahlin Police Station, Station Sergeant Rod Anderson said incidents like this have the potential to end in tragedy.

“This driver is extremely lucky that they haven’t seriously injured someone through their thoughtless and reckless behaviour,” Station Sergeant Anderson said.

“When you drive in a dangerous manner, you put lives at risk, plain and simple, and police will not tolerate this kind of behaviour on our roads.”
