A 23-year-old Calwell man will face the ACT Magistrates Court this morning (Monday, 16 April 2018) in relation to attempting to steal a motor vehicle and driving while disqualified.

About 1.08pm on 15 April 2018, ACT Policing received a report that a car was being broken into in Medley Street, Chifley. Officers from Woden Police Station arrived at about 1.11pm and observed a man leaning into the vehicle through a window.

A subsequent inspection revealed the car had a broken window and the steering wheel column housing had been removed.

The man attempted to flee the scene, and climbed onto the roof of an apartment complex in Charteris Crescent, Chifley. After a period of negotiation, the man climbed down and was taken to the Woden Police Station.

The man will appear in the ACT Magistrates Court today on six charges including riding or driving in a motor vehicle without the owner’s consent, attempted theft of a motor vehicle, and driving while disqualified.
