Man to face court after failing to stop

ACT Policing has arrested a 26-year-old Lyneham man after he failed to stop his vehicle when directed by police in Lyneham early this morning (2 November).

About 5.15am, Belconnen Patrol police witnessed a stolen white Ford Ranger proceed through a red traffic light at the intersection of Mouat Street and Ginninderra Drive, Lyneham. Police used emergency lights and sirens to signal the driver to pull over. The driver failed to stop the vehicle and accelerated away from police at speed.

Police followed the vehicle onto the Barton Highway before the vehicle came to a stop after mounting a traffic island near Randwick Road, Lyneham. The police vehicle came to a stop behind the stolen vehicle while a second police vehicle stopped in front of the stolen vehicle. As police attempted to apprehend the driver, he accelerated forward and collided with the police vehicle in front. The driver then continued to drive back and forth, ramming the two police vehicles a number of times, before he was removed from the vehicle by police.

The ACT Ambulance Services attended and transported the driver to Calvary Hospital for medical assessment.

About 8.30am, the driver was taken to the ACT Watch House and police identified the 26-year-old man as a disqualified driver. He was later charged with a range of offences relating to the theft of the stolen motor vehicle, traffic offences and obstructing a police officer.

The man will face the ACT Magistrates Court later today.
