Man charged with multiple offences following child and car search

Facing court

ACT Policing has charged a 36-year-old Wanniassa man with four offences following an alleged assault, and car and child search incident on Wednesday, 19 February 2020.

About 12.45pm, police received a report of a vehicle with a 14-month-old child in it being taken from an address in Wanniassa following an alleged assault of the child’s mother.

Police conducted extensive enquiries to locate the vehicle, a Subaru sedan, and at approximately 5.20pm the child was located safe and well at a residence in Queanbeyan.

Shortly after, the 36-year-old man was also located in Queanbeyan and was arrested by ACT Police with the assistance of New South Wales Police officers.

He appeared in Queanbeyan Magistrates court yesterday (Thursday, 20 February 2020) where ACT Policing successfully applied for his extradition.

ACT Police took custody of the man, and charged him with one count of assault causing actual bodily harm, two counts of common assault and one count of property damage.

ACT Policing deployed significant resources to locate the child and would like to acknowledge the assistance provided by NSW Police and the wider community in locating the child.

The man will appear in the ACT Magistrates court today (Friday, 21 February 2020) where bail will be opposed.
