Man arrested; witnesses sought to Civic incident

ACT Policing is seeking witnesses to an incident in Civic yesterday afternoon (Saturday, December 27) where a man was arrested.

About 2pm police attended Akuna Street in relation to a male repeatedly contacting ACT Fire and Rescue from the YHA public phone and stating there was a fire.

The male was located outside the Canberra centre with two ACT Fire and Rescue members nearby, talking on his mobile phone.

The male, a 36-year-old from Queanbeyan, was arrested shortly thereafter and taken to the ACT Regional Watch House.

During the arrest the man has resisted which resulted in five members assisting him into the police caged vehicle.

Police will allege in court that the man had made numerous nuisance calls to both ACT police emergency and ACT Fire and Rescue emergency lines.

At the time of the arrest a crowd of people witnessed the scene and police are urging those with footage to come forward as this may assist the investigation.

Anyone who may be able to provide further information or footage of the incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or via the Crime Stoppers website on act.crimestoppers.com.au. Information can be provided anonymously.

The man will face the ACT Magistrates Court tomorrow, charged with resisting arrest and two counts of using a carriage service to menace.
