Man arrested after overnight firearm incident in Civic

A 36-year-old Belconnen man is due to appear in the ACT Magistrates Court this morning (Tuesday, 25 August 2020) on seven charges following an overnight incident in Civic.

Police were called to Bunda Street about 10.45pm Monday, 24 August following reports the man was in possession of a suspected firearm.

Police will allege the man pointed his firearm at the responding officers.  

A cordon was established surrounding the area, AFP Specialist Protective Service (SPS) Tactical Response Team officers attended to secure the area, and Crisis Hostage and Negotiation Operations (CHNO) officers attended to conduct negotiations with the man.

The man surrendered to police about 1.15am, without injury to anyone. During his arrest the firearm was found to be a replica weapon.

The man will face the following charges:

  • Assault Frontline Community Service Provider (2 Counts)
  • Use Offensive Weapon – Dangerous to a Person (2 Counts)
  • Possess Firearm – Prohibited Firearm
  • Affray
  • Act to Cause Public Alarm

Police are seeking the owner of a mobile phone they believe was taken by the man as officers first arrived.
