Man armed with axe apprehended

ACT Policing apprehended a 46-year-old Weston man after he threatened police with an axe at a Weston residence last night (Tuesday December 30).

About 6.00pm, police attended a residence in Chevalier Street, Weston, in response to a report of a male damaging property in the back yard with an axe.

Police established a cordon and attempted to negotiate with the man, who was unwilling to comply with requests to disarm himself, was aggressive at times and threatened police. The man later retreated into the residence with the axe.

AFP Specialist Response Group negotiators and ACT Mental Health members attended to assist police.

About 9.15pm, the man exited the residence with the axe, moving towards police. The man was then incapacitated with the use of a Conducted Energy Weapon and apprehended by police.

The man was taken to the Canberra Hospital mental health facility for assessment.

Police held no concerns for the safety of the public during the incident.
