Fatal Five contribute to seven out of nine
Seven out of the nine fatal collisions that have occurred on ACT roads this year are believed to be the result of one or more elements of the ‘Fatal Five’
This month, the joint road safety campaign between ACT Policing and the Justice and Community Safety Directorate will focus on the ‘Fatal Five’.
The Fatal Five are:
- Alcohol or drug impaired driving
- Speeding
- Not wearing a seatbelt
- Intersections; and
- Driving whilst distracted
Officer in Charge of Traffic Operations, Acting Station Sergeant David Wills said police are still seeing too many instances of road users engaging in the Fatal Five.
“The Fatal Five are still a factor in far too many collisions on our roads,” Acting Station Sergeant Wills said.
“These behaviours are not only irresponsible, they’re also extremely dangerous, and can have tragic consequences.
“Don’t be naïve and think ‘it won’t happen to me’ – tragically, people die on ACT roads, and if you are engaging in any of the Fatal Five, you’re increasing your chances of being involved in a serious collision.
“All road users can take responsibility for road safety by not engaging in these behaviours. This will not only minimise your chances of receiving a fine, it will increase your chances of arriving alive.”
This campaign forms part of the ACT Road Safety Strategy 2011-2020 which prioritises a Vision Zero approach to road safety.
