Family violence operation in partnership with support agencies

Police Operation

ACT Policing in partnership with family violence support agencies completed a joint operation aimed at keeping victims of family violence safe and offenders accountable.

The two day operation on 7-8 August saw police working closely with partner agencies, Domestic Violence Crisis Service, Child and Youth Protection Service, ACT Victim Support and the Coordinator General Family Safety from City Police Station.

ACT Policing monitored recidivist offenders to ensure they were compliant with their Family Violence Orders and bail conditions. Victim-survivors of family violence were offered support and intervention from the most appropriate support service.

During the operation police spoke to 40 recidivist offenders and eight of those accepted to take part in support programs.

At the completion of the operation, support agencies followed up with victim-survivors to ensure they received assistance.

Family Violence Unit’s Inspector Sue Smith said the operation aimed at identifying ways to improve on engagement with victim-survivors of family violence and recidivist offenders.

“Working collaboratively, the operation identified high risk family violence offenders and ensured they understood the conditions of any court orders and other documents related to compliance. The feedback from the people’s doors we knocked on was really positive,” Inspector Smith said.

“ACT Policing and support agencies engaged with victims of family violence, informing them of any police interaction and offered support and referral to support agencies.”
