Bungendore man to face Queanbeyan court charged with child exploitation offences

ARRESTED Child exploitation offences

ACT Criminal Investigations Joint Anti Child Exploitation Team (ACT-JACET) has arrested a 24-year-old Bungendore man, after he was allegedly found in possession of child exploitation material.

The man was arrested yesterday (Friday, 12 June 2020) after members of the ACT-JACET, assisted by AFP Digital Forensics Team and ACT Policing General Duties officers, executed a search warrant on the man’s residence.

Police will allege images and videos of child exploitation material were found on the premises. Three computers, and a mobile phone were among the items seized for further investigation.

The man is scheduled to appear in Queanbeyan Local Court this morning (Saturday, 13 June) on a Commonwealth charge of possessing child abuse material. Bail will be opposed.

The ACT-JACET will continue to pursue offenders involved in the creation, distribution or possession of child exploitation material.

Members of the public who have any information about people involved in the possession or production of child abuse material are urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or via www.crimestoppers.com.au Information can be provided anonymously.

Note to media:

USE OF TERM ‘CHILD ABUSE MATERIAL,’ NOT ‘CHILD PORNOGRAPHY’

Use of the phrase “child pornography” benefits child sex abusers because it:

  • Indicates legitimacy and compliance on the part of the victim and therefore legality on the part of the abuser; and
  • Conjures images of children posing in ‘provocative’ positions, rather than suffering horrific abuse.

Every photograph captures an actual situation where a child has been abused. This is not ‘pornography’.
