Aggravated robbery in Campbell; witnesses sought

ACT Policing is seeking information from the public after a man armed with a knife entered a shop at the Campbell Shops yesterday afternoon (Sunday, 25 May) and stole the cash register.

Around 2:50pm, a man brandishing a large knife entered the shop at the shopping complex on Blamey Place, Campbell and made demands for cash.

The staff refused the demands of the knife-wielding man, fending him off with a broom and crate. After a short time, the man reached over the counter and took the entire cash register.

The man fled the store and while being chased along White Crescent by a member of the public, he dropped the cash register, breaking it open. The man took a sum of cash from the tray and left the cash register behind.

Detective Superintendent Paul Shakeshaft from Criminal Investigations said that while the actions of the staff were spirited, they are also very dangerous and could have ended in a tragedy.

“Your life is worth more than the contents of a cash register.  From a safety perspective, it is sensible to comply with the demands of an armed offender and remember as many details as you can and call triple-zero when it is safe to do so.” Detective Superintendent Shakeshaft said.

The man can be described as Caucasian, around 5’9” (175cm) in height with a solid build and blonde hair. At the time of the robbery he was wearing black shoes, grey jeans and a grey ‘hoodie’.

Police are urging anyone with information about the aggravated robbery to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. Information can be provided anonymously.
