Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags fly at Winchester Police Centre

Flag raising ceremony

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags now fly front and centre at ACT Policing Headquarters in Belconnen.

Ngunnawal Elder Auntie Violet Sheridan recently noted the absence of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags at ACT Policing stations in her role as a respected member of the Chief Police Officer’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Advisory Board.

Two new flag poles were promptly installed in front of ACT Policing Headquarters for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags to join our National, Territory and AFP flags.

Today, Chief Police Officer Justine Saunders hosted a flag raising ceremony with Auntie Violet and other representatives of Canberra’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community including the United Ngunnawal Elders Council and ACT Elected Body.

Assistant Commissioner Saunders said the symbolism of raising these flags was important for developing a mutually respectful and trusting relationship with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people of the ACT.

“ACT Policing can only serve and keep our community safe if we have a strong relationship with the community – everyone in our community,” Assistant Commissioner Saunders said.

“This flag raising shows ACT Policing’s commitment to acknowledging and respecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the ACT.

“These flags will remind us of where we need to go and what we need to do to change and improve our community relationships.”
