Today, our Chief Police Officer for the ACT Rudi Lammers announced his retirement after 34 years with the AFP and said some very powerful words as he reflected on his time as a police officer...

“I’m often asked why we do what we do. How we do what we do. Why we run towards trouble, not away from it. How we’re able to steel ourselves against the most unimaginable human tragedy and misery. How we cope with seeing things that no one should ever have to see.

The answer’s simple.... It’s what we do. And we do it, so others don’t have to.

The job of policing takes no breaks and we’re never closed for business. Some of the toughest jobs we do are in the early hours of the morning when the rest of Canberra is sleeping. We investigate the most violent and heinous crimes, and we hold people to account for those crimes.

I take great pride each and every day, coming to work knowing that I am privileged to lead ACT Policing, such a world class police force that has made Canberra one of Australia’s safest cities.

After 34 years with the AFP and 24 of those years spent in ACT Policing, it’s the right time for me to go. I can think of no better a place to leave from, than where I started as a young constable, among the terrific men and women of ACT Policing.

It’s been an honour and a privilege to lead and to work alongside people who truly care about one another and about our community.

I’ve timed my retirement to make sure that I continue to provide support to the ACT Government, and particularly the Police Minister, until after the ACT Election.”
