Canberra, bushfire season is upon us and we are facing one of the hottest summers in years. This extreme weather increases the chance of bushfires which can sadly destroy properties, homes and even lives.

While many fires are naturally occurring, others are deliberately lit.

Arson is an offence with serious consequences.

The maximum penalty for a fire deliberately lit with the intent to endanger the life of another person is 25 years imprisonment.

The maximum penalty for someone starting a bushfire, or setting fire to a vehicle or property, is imprisonment for 15 years.

Let’s prevent a tragedy from occurring this summer. Here are some handy tips;

  • be alert
  • have a bushfire plan
  • abide by fire bans
  • report cigarette butts being thrown from vehicles
  • clear excess leaves from your roof and properties.
