Travel safely on the Kings Highway this summer
ACT Policing and the Kings Highway Road Safety Partnership are urging the public to drive safely on the Kings Highway this summer.
With large numbers of motorists travelling to the coast on the King’s Highway this holiday season, drivers are reminded to obey speed limits, take regular breaks and be patient and alert when driving in heavy traffic conditions.
ACT Policing Acting Officer in Charge Traffic Operations, Station Sergeant Marcus Boorman said as the weather warms there will be an increase in people travelling to the coast.
“This increase in road users on the Kings Highway will impact how you travel. Remain vigilant, be patient and courteous and take regular breaks to ensure you and your passengers make it to your destination safely,”
“Road safety is everyone’s responsibility. A small accident can have serious consequences and could result in serious injuries or death. Don’t put your life or your passenger’s lives in danger by doing the wrong thing. Be alert and remember your summer for the right reasons,” Sergeant Boorman said.
ACT Policing and NSW Police Force will work closely to provide a coordinated approach to traffic enforcement on the Kings Highway and will actively target dangerous driving behaviours, including speeding and drug and alcohol impaired drivers.
“Unfortunately there was a serious collision on the Kings Highway this week, which is currently subject of an ongoing investigation by police. Our message is that we want everyone to arrive safely at their destination. You will see a marked increase in police patrols along the Kings Highway, with police using both marked and unmarked police vehicles to enforce speed limits, road rules and target anti-social driving behaviour,” NSW Police Force Sergeant Dominic Goodyer from Monaro Highway Patrol said.
Joanne Wilson Ridley, Road Safety Officer from the Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council said to encourage drivers to take regular breaks on their journey, the Braidwood Driver Reviver are giving away free reusable travel mugs to some lucky travelers.
“SES volunteers generously give up their time to staff the Braidwood Driver Reviver and they would much rather be giving out a free travel cup than responding to a fatigue crash on the Kings Highway. The service will be open most weekends and public holidays over the festive period. 200 travel cups will be given away to drivers that stop and revive. Fatigue is one of the major factors contributing to crashes, so plan to take a break on your journey to the coast, drop in and say hi to the SES staff and pick up one of the colourful reusable travel mugs.”
The Kings Highway Road Safety Partnership formed nine years ago with members from Eurobodalla, Palerang, Shoalhaven and Queanbeyan shire councils, ACT Policing, NSW Police, Roads and Maritime Services and the Justice and Community Safety Directorate with the aim of reducing road trauma on the Kings Highway.
The campaign will run until the end of January 2018.
