NSW P-plater caught speeding on Majura Parkway

An 18-year-old man from Queanbeyan, NSW has had his licence suspended and been fined more than $1800 after being caught driving at excessive speed on the Majura Parkway.  

About 11.20am yesterday (Monday, 13 November 2023), police were conducting traffic targeting along the Majura Parkway, Majura when they identified a white Ford Transit van travelling southbound at 147km/h in the signposted 100km/h zone. 

Police stopped the vehicle and spoke with the driver, who informed police he was working as a courier, was heading to collect an item, and had a short timeframe to collect it. 

The driver produced his NSW provisional P1 licence, which restricts him to a maximum speed of 90km/h.  

His right to drive in the ACT was immediately suspended for a period of 90 days. He was also issued a $1841 infringement. 

Earlier this year, the ACT Government introduced legislation giving police powers to seize vehicles for exceeding the posted speed limit by more than 45 km/h. While the vehicle was not seized on this occasion, the owner of the courier company attended the location and spoke with police, expressing their shock at the driver’s behaviour.     

ACT Policing would like to remind people driving in the ACT that vehicles travelling at speeds greater than 45km/h can be seized even if the driver is not the registered owner, or is from interstate.  

P-plate drivers are also reminded that they are bound by the rules and licencing conditions of their home state when driving in the ACT.
