More AMC detainees charged with family violence offences

FAMILY VIOLENCE

ACT Policing's Family Violence Unit working with ACT Corrective Services have charged four Alexander Maconochie Centre (AMC) detainees with contraventions of family violence orders (FVOs) this month.

During November, four detainees at the AMC have been charged with a combined total of 14 contraventions of served and enforceable, nationally recognised FVOs.

Police will allege the detainees contacted protected persons from within the AMC in contravention of their FVOs by providing false information to ACT Corrective Services, using other detainees’ telephone accounts, or passing messages through third parties.

Additionally, the Family Violence Unit has also charged an associate of one of the detainees, who is not a detainee at the AMC, with aiding and abetting the contravention of an FVO.

Contravening, and aiding and abetting the contravention of an FVO are both serious offences carrying a maximum penalty of up to five years imprisonment.

Police are committed to reducing all forms of family violence in the community and will continue to investigate this type of offending to prioritise victim safety and ensure offenders accountability.

If you are a victim of family violence or believe someone you know is the victim of family violence, you can contact police on 131 444 or Triple Zero (000) in an emergency, or attend any police station. You can also make a report to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or via the Crime Stoppers ACT website. Information can be provided anonymously.
