Man to face court charged with online child sex offences

Facing Court

A 27-year-old Chisholm man is expected to face the ACT Magistrates Court today (Saturday, 25 July 2020) charged with a number of online child sex offences.

Police will allege the 27-year-old used a carriage service to groom and procure a 14-year-old girl, in addition to requesting the girl produce child exploitation material and send to him via social media applications.

The man was arrested yesterday (Friday 24 July 2020) as part of a police operation. It will be alleged the man travelled to a location in Stirling for the purpose of meeting with the 14-year-old girl.

Note to media: USE OF TERM ‘CHILD EXPLOITATION’, NOT ‘CHILD PORNOGRAPHY’

Use of the phrase “child pornography” benefits child sex abusers because it:

  • Indicates legitimacy and compliance on the part of the victim and therefore legality on the part of the abuser; and
  • Conjures images of children posing in ‘provocative’ positions, rather than suffering horrific abuse.

Each photograph captures an actual situation where a child has been abused. This is not ‘pornography”.
