Facing court

ACT Policing has charged an 18-year-old man following an incident at the Australian National University (ANU) yesterday (25 August 2017).

Shortly after 9am, a man allegedly assaulted students and a lecturer with a baseball bat. During the class, the student stood from his seat with a baseball bat and approached the lecturer at the front of the class. Other students in the class intervened and attempted to restrain the student. During the incident, the male student assaulted four people, one male and three females, including the lecturer.

Campus security attended and detained the student until police arrived.

The ACT Ambulance Service attended and treated four students for sustained non-life threating injuries and transferred to them to the Canberra Hospital.

Police took the 18-year-old man into custody and conveyed him to the ACT Watch House.

Police have now charged the man with several counts of assault including assault causing actual bodily harm and intentionally inflict grievous bodily harm. He will face the ACT Magistrates Court this morning (26 August 2017).
