Man arrested for drink driving after dangerous stunt

Drink Driving

Police arrested a 25-year-old Indian national about 4am today (Wednesday, 29 July 2020) after he was allegedly driving while seated on the open window sill of his vehicle, with only his legs inside the vehicle.

Police will allege the silver Toyota Corolla was being driven along Aikman Drive, Belconnen at approximately 70 km/h at the time.

The man stopped the vehicle when directed to by police, and failed a subsequent roadside breath test. When he was subjected to a further test at Belconnen Police Station, the man registered a blood alcohol content of 0.090. As the man produced an Indian driver’s licence, he was subject to a zero blood alcohol limit.

When asked why we was driving the vehicle at speed from outside it, the man said he had done it on a bet.

ACT Policing Officer-in-Charge of Gungahlin Station, Inspector Rachel Hutka said no bet was worth risking your life and the lives of others.

“Drink driving is dangerous. Driving from anywhere other than the driver’s seat is also dangerous,” Inspector Hutka said.

The man was served with an Immediate Suspension Notice, and is due to appear in court on Monday, 10 August 2020 to face charges of drink driving and negligent driving – other than death or injury.
